Terms of use
Last updated: [date of launch]
- What you write, record and upload is yours, and it stays private.
- Only upload scores you have the right to use, such as your own music, public-domain pieces or sheet music you bought, for your own practice.
- Don't use Pianotes to share or distribute other people's copyrighted music.
- Pianotes is provided as it is; we do our best to keep it working and your work safe.
About these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and [name of the person or company] ("we", "us"), the operator of Pianotes. By creating an account or using Pianotes you agree to them. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your personal data.
Your account
- Keep your login details safe; you're responsible for what happens in your account.
- Give a real email address so we can reach you about your account.
- If you are under [16], you need permission from a parent or guardian.
- You can close your account at any time. Download any pieces you want to keep first.
Your music stays yours
You keep all rights to the music you write or record in Pianotes and to the files you upload ("your content"). You give us only the permission we need to run the service for you: to store your content, show it to you, play it back and convert it (for example to MusicXML, MIDI or audio) when you ask. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account.
Your content is private. We don't publish it or share it with other users.
Uploading scores
You may only upload music you have the right to use. In practice that means:
- music you composed yourself;
- public-domain music, for example from IMSLP; and
- sheet music you own or are licensed to use (such as a score you bought), for your own personal practice, where the law allows that.
You must not use Pianotes to copy, share or distribute copyrighted music you don't have the rights to. Because uploads are private, you are responsible for making sure your use is allowed.
Copyright complaints
If you believe content on Pianotes infringes your copyright, email [contact email]. Include the work concerned, where you found it, and your contact details. We will review the notice and remove infringing content where appropriate, and we may close the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe.
The starter library and our software
The pieces in the Starter library are in the public domain. Our arrangements, the layout of the scores, the exercises and the Pianotes software are ours. You may use them for learning and practice, and you may save copies to your own library, but please don't resell them or present them as your own work.
Fair use of the service
Please don't:
- try to access other people's accounts or data;
- disrupt or overload the service, or get around its limits;
- scrape or copy the service, or use it to build a competing product; or
- upload anything unlawful or harmful, such as malware.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. Where we can, we'll tell you first and give you a chance to download your pieces.
Availability and changes
We work to keep Pianotes available and your pieces safe, but we can't promise the service will always be uninterrupted or error-free. We may add, change or remove features. If we ever shut Pianotes down, we will give you at least 30 days' notice to download your pieces.
Connecting a piano needs a browser with Web MIDI (such as Chrome or Edge on a computer). Some features may not work in other browsers.
Liability
Pianotes is provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost content you didn't keep a copy of. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that can't be limited by law.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll tell you by email or in the app before the change takes effect. If you don't agree, you can close your account.
